My 1994 Integra LS is grinding from 2nd to 3rd gear, but if i shift CAREFULLY it will sometime's not grind.?
I have a 1994 acura integra LS 4 door. Everything is stock on it except the original head was thrown to the junk yard, and a b16a (vtec head) was put on the b18b1 original block which then makes it Ls/Vtec. I also have an Exedy Street Clutch whichs is designed to feel like an oem clutch, but still give it more support. The previous owner put it on.. Now, when i shift into 3rd carefully there is no grind at all, but once i shift a little faster it grinds every time. For example, if i take my time shifting from 2nd to 3rd, it will be fine, but if i shift at a normal speed, 75% of the time it will slightly grind. It's not a terrible grind, but its not good either. My question is, can this be fixed? Can it be the clutch? how much would it cost? any help would be great. thanks.
(btw, the transmission has about 120,000 miles and other then the slight grind the transmission is perfectly healthy)
Each tranny has a special function which helps gear synchronization. This makes it easier for the gears to mesh or fit together when changing, because you're going from one set of gears to a diff set of gears, the size of the gears are different in each gear. so the synchronization helps to ease the gears in more carefully so there's no grinding, which happens when you don't have synchronization. (sounds like a bunch of doubletalk, doesn't it!!)
The synchronization usually goes out in just one gear range, such as your 2nd to 3rd. Altho', I've always had the problem of downshifting, rather than upshifting.
It's not the clutch itself, but it's part of the transmission. I'd suggest with that much mileage on the tranny, to have it rebuilt. Then you'd get it fixed and can go another 120K without any worries!! If you don't, you'll only hurt the tranny more with each grinding that happens.
