timing cover leak on Taurus 98?
i have a Ford Taurus 1998 with an oil leak.
(3.0 DO-HC engine)
Garage says it's leaking from the timing cover and that's it's like a 10 hour job.
they also told me that they are not that interested in doing it.
Is it the time it's supposed to take to change the gasket on the timing cover ( in know you have to get the engine off the car first and put it back after) or did they inflate it to make it not worth it (blue book value is under $1000.)
I currently let it leak and add oil (it's dripping a few drop every day so i could live with it. i don't like that it drips on the exhaust which makes a bad smell.
Is there a risk of the oil catching fire ?
Thanks for advice.
1. You don't have to completely remove the engine, but partially remove it to change the cover. It's a pretty serious job.
2. It's not worth it
3. The leak can start a fire, but not too likely
4. The DOHC has serious problems with the cam sprockets and can blow up the motor (it's an interference motor). That's a whole other issue!
5. Try to sell it. Play dumb. Use the money for a better car
