I live in a region that has an enormous number of goat heads. On a single twelve mile trip, I picked up six goat heads and had one flat. I fix a flat at least once every 150 miles (about once a week).
I use the most expensive Armadillo tire, thick tubes, a liner, and goo to the tires (with reluctance because of the mess and damage to tire pressure gauges and pumps).
My bike shops both warned that the solid bike tires may come off the rim in turns. I also realize that the momentum of the bike will increase making accelerating and braking slower, but I'm not a racer and don't care about that. If anything, I bike for exercise so a little extra work is OK.
My plan is to add a solid tire to the back and use goo in the front. Does this sound like a solution for a commuter with a road bike with 700 X 25 tires?
@badbadleroybrown: goat-heads are vicious thorns (seedpods). They were surely one of Nature's greatest acts of unkindness towards bicyclists. The weed commonly grows in road cracks and expansion joints, sprawling out along the pavement; it's not an off-road-only scenario.
Personally, I'd say you're doing better than fair with 150 commuting miles between flats. Regardless, I'd try other choices before resorting to a solid tire. Would a Schwalbe Marathon Supreme fit your frame? Can you ride a 28mm (or even 32mm) tire with lower psi that won't drive the goat-head through the tire's casing and liner as easily?
