Im restoring a 72 GP with a 400ci, everything stock, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if i need to do any modifications to install a roller cam, lifters, and rocker arms. it has 96CC chamber heads, 2.11/1.77 valves. also, is there a difference between a flat tappet and roller cam?
The roller type rockers actually add horse power do to the fact that they are extremely smooth in operation.. And wear longer than the regular rockers. As far as I know when you are changing over to this type rocker, and cam assy everything you need to make it right comes in a kit. The kit should include the rockers, lifters and pushrods specifically meant for your car. The change over should not need to many other modifications unless you go with different valves, Or the cam is bigger causing the valves to open more. Then you'd have to make a piston change so the valves won't be hitting the pistons when they open.
While you have the head off I would recommend that you port and polish the head. This also gains horse power and yes even slightly better gas mileage do to the fact that the air and fuel rushing in has less resistance because of the polished metal being less porous.
