I was listening to the radio tonight, and there was a lecture by the author of "The Oil Game". I was curious whether anyone with a technical background had read the book, and what they thought of the thesis. The speaker's two points were that we could make our infrastructure much more efficient by changing the design of our automobiles (using carbon fibers to make cars instead of steel, etc), and we could switch to bio fuel such as switch grass. The best part of this is that the changes could be accomplished through market based policies.
Is anyone familiar with this book, and what do you think of the policies it proposes?
Not the book, but the technology, yes. These are among the technologies that are either here now or wellunderway as far as development. It gets even better--with solar and other ways o f generating electricity, the need for biodeisal, etc, may not be all that great.
And the policy model (obviously I don't know the details) sounds right. These technologies are still relatively expensive--but the costs are falling rapidly. we are headed for a time when no one is going to want oil--because it would be a waste of money better spent on other things.
