Twin Counter Shaft Transmissions w/clutch brake.?
I have a Pete with an Eaton with a 18 speed with 2 speed Aux. I have just replaced all the sliding clutches in the transmission. All the gears were in excellent condition and the teeth the clutches mesh with. I have the correct amount of play in the clutch pedal and at the throwout bearing. The shafts rotates fine and I don't have any gear whines. I did get the shafts in time with eachother so i know this isn't the problem. But I am able to put it in 1st gear and Reverse fine.....its when I go to the next gear I have problems and I grind my sliding clutch....It will not go into gear. I get it up to about 2200-2500 RPM when i go to shift. It won't go into the next gear until I have come to a complete stop. Then i have to go back to 1st gear and i am back to square 1. I also have a new triple plate clutch....Manual adjustment
Well...it sounds like you got it timed right because if you did not get the gears timed right the transmission would not turn freely,it would bind up. You say you can get it in the other gears after coming to a stop so that also rules out gear timing. You mention your freeplay in the pedal is ok, but, you should check the internall adjustment by checking the space between the rear of the throw-out bearing and the front of the clutch brake with the clutch pedal released you should have a half inch gap between the throw-out bearing and the clutch brake. If not turn the adjusting ring in the pressure plate untill you have achieved the proper gap. Turn the adjusting ring clockwise to shorten the distance and counterclockwise to lengthen the distance. Once you have your half inch gap set then and only then adjust the linkage for freeplay. You should be able to feel the clutch brake get squeezed when the clutch pedal is approx one inch from the floor board.
Also note (and i am sure you already know this) that these transmissions are not synchronized meaning you would typically speed shift and not use the clutch to upshift or downshift, most truck drivers only use the clutch to stop and start
Triple plate clutch?? most are a twin disc clutch with an intermediate plate.
Hope that helps you and good luck
