okay i know this is a pretty dumb question to ask but i just want to know.
Why do people put in EMS like a greddy e-manage in their evo? do you really need it? can you still tune without it?

Ok Well lets start with the basics.
A turbocharger creates more power by increasing the amount and pressure of the air going into the engine.
More boost + more fuel = more power.
A boost controller regulates the amount of pressure going into the engine by helping controll the wastegate actuator. (the wastegate actuator is a device that bypasses exhaust gases to control the turbo)
Aftermarket engine management Is a way to tune the amount of fuel/timing and other factors that play into combustion.
Remember More air+ more fuel=more power? Well in most applications the stock engine management system cannot add enough fuel to compensate for the increase in air.So in order to "tune" for good power and reliability you need a way to control this yourself.
Other factors that can be controlled are ignition timing, boost pressure....etc
Finally, the turbo timer protects the turbo by keeping the engine running, therefore oil flowing too cool the turbo after a hard run.
Now this is a very shallow look at how all of this works but I hope it helps you understand things a bit better.
