Can I convert an RS232 cable to BNC?
I need to interface a pressure gauge with a 15-pin RS-232 output to a Data Acquisition card with only BNC inputs. Is it possible to convert one end of the RS-232 cable to a BNC connector? If so, any suggestions on how to do this and how many BNC connectors I might need. Thanks
It depends on what kind of Acquisition card you use. I guess it got digital Inputs Outputs. Next it depends on If pressure gauge communicate with hardware flow control(handshake). I guess it can communicate without handshake. Then it's easier, because you need two signals RXD and TXD (2,3 on cannon connector), then translate RS232 levels to TTL using e.g MAX232. You need 2 BNC's one as TTL out, second as TTL in. and ofcourse common ground pin 5 on Cannon. And last I think you got 9-pin or 25-pin cannon RS232 connectornot 15 pin(they are used at VGA)... If gauge requires hardware flow control it's hardest you need more level converters, and convert RXD, TXD, CTS, RTS, DSR, DTR and DCD. I hope these links helps
