trying to save money on gas bill, if I keep house at 45 degrees is that a safe remp to keep pipes from freezing? Thanks
Unfortunately there is no simple answer to that question because it depends on where your pipes are routed. Even if the ambient temp in your home is 45, some areas can be much colder. The places to look out for are anywhere the pipes are near the exterior of your house, especially in a basement or crawlspace. If you can access those places, you can put in some pipe insulation(looks like a tube made of foam, available at hardware store). It is also a good idea to leave all your faucets running at a steady drip - this will keep the water moving though the coldest areas so it will have less chance to freeze. Even with those precautions, I don't think I would risk setting the thermostat much lower than 60. Good luck.
