HAS ANYONE HAD PROBLEMS WITH THE FUEL PUMP ON THE DODGE CUMMINS DIESEL ENGINES?
CUMMINS HAD A DEFECT OF PUTTING THE FUEL PUMP ON THE SIDE OF THE ENGINE ON THE 2000 MODELS AT LEAST. HAS ANYONE ELSE HAD THIS PROBLEM?
My friend has an 02 and had an 01 before both with lift pump problems, that resulted in a dead VP44 injection pump on the 01.
Basically like you said, the lift pump is on the side of the engine and is sucking fuel from the tank. As it would be pumps like to push fluids better than suck them.
The lift pump would die and since the 98.5-02 24V's have a fuel lubricated VP44 injection pump, it would soon die from lack of lubrication.
Dodge is evidently aware of the issue and started putting the fuel pump in the tank in the 04.5 trucks.
They also have a retrofit in tank lift pump available for previous models as well.
If you're out of warranty or if you have some mods that require more fuel it is a very good idea to get rid of the engine mounted lift pump.
In fact don't get the Dodge retrofit in tank pump if you're going to have to pay for it yourself or if you have fueling mods. The reason being is there are pumps out there that can provide much more fuel and can sustain fuel pressure under high flow, something that the Dodge in tank pump can not. You will pay almost the same for the Dodge pump or a good aftermarket pump.
Look into getting a Glacier Diesel Walbro pump system, FASS or Airdog systems. They're all quality and will give you all the fuel you need and won't starve the VP44.
Here's my personal experience. I have an 07 5.9 Cummins and it comes with the in tank pump from the factory. I put a fuel pressure gauge on it and it would run about 8 psi at idle. On a hard WOT pull (with stock power) it would pull fuel pressure down to about 2~3 psi!
When I got my Smarty programmer I also installed a Glacier Diesel Walbro pump system and 2 micron filter kit. Now I run about 19 psi at idle and it might drop to 18 psi at WOT. This is after adding the programmer too so I'm giving it more fuel than stock.
Heres the link to the Glacier pump for a 2000.

Any of them are simple systems and are easy to install. In fact they're easier to install on 04 and previous years because you don't have to drop the fuel tank!
