dyno, ecu chip for bmw 318i?
Is it worth getting? I've heard differing opinions on the usefulnes of these computer chips. I have a 95' bmw 318i with a cold air intake.
how much could I expect to pay for one of these (a legit one, not just one that tricks your engine into thinking it's running differently) from a reputable company? And, approximately, how much of a performance boost could I expect? And, lastly, how would this affect the fuel economy and engine life? I'm just trying to squeeze a few more horses out of it without drastically shortening engine life.
A chip generally just advances your ignition timing a little to squeeze a little more out of your engine without going over and damaging your engine.
This is why generally, a chipped car MUST run on premium gas.
You wouldn't really notice any increase in power at the top end, however, in town driving, you may notice the car giving slightly better response as the chip tries to give you better torque at lower RPMs.
There will be only marginal impact on your fuel economy and no impact on engine life.
Other things you might want to consider (that would give a little more without impacting engine life) is upgrading the spark plugs, spark plug leads and coils to high performance versions.
Some people like to change out the exhausts too but those generally only make the car louder and in one independent test, the exhaust actually canceled out the performance gains of the cold air intake... so proceed with caution if you wish to go for that.
Check with the guys at www.bavauto.com to see which company they recommend for your car. I used a company called StarChips from the UK for my UK spec 95 318ti.
