How to get Dsl internet via modem?
for the past year I have been using a wireless networking adapter but lately its been nothing but a hassle. I have sbc yahoo dsl (now AT@T) and I also have an xbox 360 right by my computer so I was wondering (step by step I'm a little computer illiterate) on how to get internet connection using a modem. I have a 2wire homportal downstairs for my other computer.I would like to be able to plug the ethernet cable directly in the xbox 360 when i want but then also be able to take it out when im done and use the computer. It would be helpful if you suggested where to get the modem, what model to use, ect. Also do I need to get anything from AT@T to allow me to use it. Once again I already use internet downstairs via 2wire homeportal. Also, do I need any filter to go in my phone line. Also do I need to buy an ethernet cable or will it come with the modem.Thx in advance for assistance. Best answer goes to first one to answer these questions so I have a clear idea of how to do it.
You can only have one DSL modem in your home. If the downstairs computer (I'm assuming it's a computer) is able/willing to use a wireless connection then your solution is easy - move the modem and 2wire upstairs so that your XBox and your computer can be connected via cables and just install the wireless adapter on the computer downstairs. If you're unable to move the modem/2wire upstairs, you can just run cables from that 2wire to your room - it's a slight hassle but worth it. I was tired of wireless myself so just ran cables to all my computers.
So, the idea here is that the internet comes in through your modem first, then to your 2wire, and then your 2wire distributes the internet throughout your house. You can put the modem anywhere in your house as long as you can run a phoneline to it. Hope that helps.
