My late husband used gilly suits while he served in the military and adapted the camo gear for hunting after his tour in Viet Nam was up. He wouldn't not necessarily use fire-arms when he was hunting and preferred to be on more equal terms in the realm of predator/prey ... maybe he had a death wish ... I don't know. But after Nam he didn't consider it fair to just stalk an animal and ambush it from the safety of a tree-stand. He was very reverent about taking the animals lives and would use every part of it in the tradition of his Native American heritage. But I always wondered if anyone else resorted to gilly suits to hunt or was he just a little more over the edge than we all imagined.
Your husband was not over the edge, just knowledgeable of the necessity of being concealed...I use gillie suits all the time in waterfowl hunting....My son, when he was young had never taken a snow goose...We were set up between a refuge, and a "feeding field" with decoys, and the geese just were not interested in decoys that day...Wanting him to take his first snow goose, we put on gillie suits, slithered like snakes about 1/2 mile into a large field, where the geese were flying low to the refuge...We lay on our backs, completely concealed, and reloaded our shotguns, and within minutes, a flock of geese came right over us less than 50 feet high....My son fired one shot, and got his goose...It was a great lesson for him, as I explained that a hunter must always adapt his tactics to the situation, and use complete concealment to be successful.....
