Is 1971 LT1 Z-28 Camaro Engine Internally Balanced?
It is in a 1968 Nova The flywheel must be replaced as it is worn and the starter makes a bad grinding noise. At about 55 & up there is a bad vibration & I need to know what type of flywheel & starter to use.
The engine is balanced from the factory, that's what the crankshaft counterweights are for. It's not what you'd call 'race' balanced (blueprinted), but it shouldn't be making the whole car vibrate excessively...
That engine does not have additional internal balance shafts, but then it doesn't rev very hard, nor does it have a lot of valvetrain componentry that can induce vibration.
The speed-dependant vibration sounds more like a wheel balancing problem - if you have had the wheels balanced and your brakes and steering chcked, then I would say the tailshaft needs attention. Sometimes they throw balance weights, after all, they are only tack welded on.
Your local Chevy dealer should be able to tell you the part numbers you need (stock parts will be fine), and if the flywheel itself is worn, you'll probably need to replace the clutch as well. If you're doing the clutch, then you'd be silly not to replace the rear main seal, the spigot bearing and the throwout bearing whilst you've got the gearbox out and the flywheel off.
The grinding noise from the starter is probably the ringgear, which is heat-shrunk onto the outside of the flywheel.
If this needs replacing, it is much easier to get the dealership to fit it to the flywheel for you. If the ringgear is worn, well guess what? The starter pinion has a good chance of being on its way out too.
Sorry about the bad news, at least car parts are so cheap in the U.S.!
