KA24DE. What do I need?
I've gone to ka24de.org, or whatever the famous 240sx forum is and I've done some researching. I'm planning on building my 240sx to about 400 whp and need some help. I have car repair experience, just not building an engine. Here is what I know I need for that power range, but what am I missing?
Fuel Injectors
Fuel Rail
Fuel Pump
Fuel Pressure Regulator
Turbo
Wastegate
Blow Off Valve
Cold Air Intake
Intake Manifold
Downpipe
Exhaust Manifold
Intercooler and Piping
Cat-Back Exhaust
Test Pipe
Clutch
Flywheel
Ignition System
ECU
Throttle Body
Pistons
Piston Rods
Valves
Valve Springs and Retainers
Wideband O2 sensor
Head Studs
Main Studs
Radiator
Head Ported/Polished
Cams
Motor Mounts
Oil Catch Can
That John Paul guy will crush any ones dreams. It is fine to give the cons to turboing a 10-20 year old KA but he never gives the pros.
"special crankshaft "
No need to touch the crank. Maybe get it polished while it is out. Stock has never failed. There are guys running 700hp-1000hp on the stock KA crank.
" Big oil cooler larger radiator. "
Oil cooler...eh maybe. Some guys that do more then easy daily driving add them. It doesnt cost much to put one on. If your cooling system is healthy then a larger radiator isn't needed. Again, it is only $250 for a new one. So if you want. Most guys do just fine with normal street driving on the stock cooling system.
"Titanium valve keepers double springs Camshafts."
There is no need to even touch the head up to about 400hp...some guys are making 500 on the stock head. Does it help, yes. If you have money to burn have the head worked on.
"450hp do you have any idea how much money it takes to make a low end torque 2.4 liter truck motor run that hard?"
It takes about $4000 if you take your time and shop around and do all the labor yourself. You can do 300hp for $2000 if you have a healthy stock engine. Might want to shoot for 300 before the jump to 400.
For the love of god please stop calling it a truck engine like it is a bad thing. That is SOOOO 2001. It was used in the Stanza first. Is it used in trucks yes. Why is that bad thing? I want my engine to have some grunt.
"Also once you blow up two or three motors transmissions and differentials trying you will find the car totally unstreetable. 4 wheel studs will not work with that kind of power."
This is about the closest thing to good info here. Some people start having problems with the trans at 350-400hp. Very few people. It depends on what type of driving you are doing and the health of your trans. The dif seems fine for tons of power...just kind of silly not to upgrade to get all the power to both wheels. Maybe look into the 300zx trans swap. Un-streetable? With some good tires out back you'll be fine. You might spin 1st and 2nd and 3rd for a bit. Stay out of the rain
No need to swap to 5 lug.
"Cut your loss and install a LS-1 or LS-2 motor now."
It will cost you 2x as much as a turbo KA and you will have to relearn a new engine/drive train.
