ok we have a 350 v8 not sure what its out of but his grandpa apperantly built it up and it already has 400hp, we dont know for sure though because his grandpa died before we could ask. it now sits in a 1950 ford pickup. it beat a corvette up a hill when it was in the hands of his grandpa. but anyway we would like to restore the truck and hot rod the engine. but we can only spend about $1000 on the build of the engine, no labor and we are getting a 400 crank, 400 pistons/connecting rods from a salvage yard and getting them cleaned from a speed shop. what else can we do to it?
How about this - if its running just fine, don't mess with it! Push that money toward the restoration of the truck, and keep it as a runner and save more cash as you go. With that much power in a 50 pickup, and no need to race it, why would you tear into a perfectly good engine?
Otherwise, if it isn't running now, you should tear the engine down and get a good idea of what you have now - if you need to machine that engine, you'll eat through 1000 bucks fairly easy. If the engine only needs a little hone, you shouldn't go throwing a worthless stock 400 crank in it, considering what's available in the aftermarket. You would not want to shoot for 400hp throwing junk at your engine. You should also figure out what heads you have, intake, and see if you need to upgrade there for better power.
Obviously, you must now have an idea that you can't exactly just punch-and-go on this engine build!
