I am trying to add some interior lights to my BMW e90. I will be using led light strips to illuminate the footlight of the driver and passenger seats. I want to use an external battery source, not my car battery (battery being in the trunk of the car, and wiring would be all over the place) and have a rocker or any other type of switch to turn on and off. This is fairly simple project.
What external battery should I use? Lantern light 12v? Do I need a fuse in this case? What kind of wiring is needed?

The problem is that the link you posted wouldn't work. But to answer your Q, you always use a fuse, on the positive wire next to the battery.
The switch should only have two terminals, you simply go in one, and out the other. Test the circuit on the table before you wire it into the car.
Re: the external battery, it's a waste of time, The LED's use little current, won't hurt the battery, and you will use more wire going to the trunk than hooking in the fuse box.
But yes, you can use any 12V battery.
