I'm thinking about getting a different car and I was thinking of getting a 1999 or 2000 Volkswagen Jetta. I've been reading a little bit about the reliability, and it seems like my best bet is going with a stick that's under 100k miles for the best reliability. I know jJetta's don't have the best reliability, but they are relatively inexpensive and they're far better looking than any civic/neon/corolla/insert ugly teen car. If you own a Jetta, how has your reliability been so far?
stay away from the 1999 1/2 model year jettas, it was the first year of the new body design, lots of problems with them, 2000 is ok, before you buy make sure all recalls have bee ntaken care of, which actually no you can check with a carfax report or if you go to a vw dealer, see if the car has been regularly serviced.
the 2.0 liter engine had a tendancy for oil leaks. you are right stick is a better way to go in any vehicle for transmission longevity as long as the peron didnt beat the hell out of it.
make sure the clutch is good.
I worked for VW for 2 years and from all the customers I saw it was hit or miss, either they swore to the vw or the cursed it.
