Liter Big Boost
help with a supercharger in a mustang gt?

im gettin a used 02/03 mustang gt with a 4.6 litre V8. im gettin a superchips reprogrammer and an performance chip (i dont know if theyll work together but if not then ill get a refund) im also gettin dual cold air intake and a larger throttle body and underdrive pulleys along with sum good traction bars. im thinkin about gettin a supercharger just to add a big boost and the mustang.with a supercharger itll have about 525 horses. but without it would be about 405. what all do i need to put a shupercharger in and how much will it all cost if i have a professional install it.... should i get a turbo instead?? i have a friend who owns a shop who said theyll only charge my $50 an hour instead of $80 to work on the car so thatll save me sum money. i make and xtra $1500 dollars a month that i can spend on the car. thanx for the help

the most you will get with bolt ons (CAI, plus performance exhaust-catbacks & x-pipe, plus headers plus throttle body, plus retune with the chip) is about 15% increase in HP overstock....so in the neighborhood of 300hp for 02/03 profile....and about 280 maybe 285rwHPwith headers (HP at the wheels).

the MAXIMUM this engine can handle on stock internals is a mild boost supercharger (or turbo - really does not matter as they make the same power increase when installed at the same level of induction - "boost") which will take you up in the range of 390HP.

a supercharger will be better than the turbo cause its a lighter installation, runs cooler, more dependable and delivers power earlier & in a more linear fashion than a turbo plus its cheaper / easier to install.

to go for bigger power (higher boost...above 8 p.s.i.) you will have to install at the bottom end complete or partial stroker kit (for certain forged low compression pistons, rods, and forged crank bearings) and top end likely better heads (performance studs for sure) better fuel set up including pump, bigger injectors , rails.

....you can price out all the parts (supercharger, headers, CAI, throttle body, exhaust system) to get you to almost 400hp at
american muscle or lethal performance.

i estimate all in with labor (approx 3 days including a pro tune on the supercharger if your friend has experience doing that plus access to a dyno) between $7500 and 8500.

if you want to run bigger power, open up the engine and install better internals/heads....you will easily be into the project for another
$ 4000 minimum.

your cheaper option of course is to install a nitrous kit.....but again has to be only a short spray as your profile runs the large chance of engine failure once you get in that range of plus 390hp.

in terms of setting up the suspension and going quicker from the get go the mustang does NOT have independent rear suspension so launch issues will not be solved with traction bars. you need:
-control arms
-lower the car on performance springs (H&R or eibachs
-stiffen the chassis with full length sub chassis connectors (welded in-not bolted in)
-better, wider tires (preferably on slightly oversize rims)
-3.73 gears in the rear end ....or larger if you are not doing highway driving)
-short throw shifter

power is not cheap and quite frankly it is often better to buy a mustang that has already been modified rather than to do the modification program yourself (power on the hoof is cheaper)....plus there are lots of good modified mustangs around and your friend with the shop can always ck them out to make sure they are solid - compression strong.

cheers 04 cobra (previously heavily modified 01 GT)
