Marine Offshore Engines
Boat engine stalls after 30 minutes of trolling at 700 rpm.?

I have a 1972 20' Thompson I/O 6 cly. Mercruiser (details can be found here http://www.iboats.com/Thompson_Marine__225_Offshore_Express__1972/bp/64b94484r0)

When I troll at about 700 rpm for about 30-40 minutes, the boat will suddenly stall and will not restart. We usually drop anchor and fish for about 20 minutes and the engine will start back up. The temperature reads about 165 (if I remember correctly) when this happens so I don't think it is overheating.

Before I launched this year, I had both of the original gas tanks removed and one new tank installed with all new lines. The marina assures me their gas is ethanol free. Someone suggested to me that the pressure value on the new tank could be faulty. Does this sound reasonably? What else can I check?

If they feel it's a pressure valve, they've likely experienced the same symptoms. Check your water intake to see if it is clogged. Your motor could still be overheating, but not registering. You may have a coil or some other electrical module overheating and it's ready to go out permanently. Water cooler blades are usually plastic and not very durable, especially in hot weather. Also 165 is not very hot, perhaps not hot enough to burn out line condensation in your fuel system. Most likely, your depth finder is hooked up to your ignition switch, which cuts the motor every time a school of Brown Trout are found below, telling you it's a good time to stop, drop a more lines than you're licensed for, anchor, and swig a cold beer.
