today at the auto parts store i saw these little filters that looked like mini cold air intake filters that were called breather filters and i was wondering what exactly they do? what are the benefits of having one? and where would you put one on a 1991 mercury grand marquis? thank you
Actually its job is a very important part of the PCV system which is short for: Positive Crankcase Ventilation.
The PCV function is to reduce the amount of pressure inside the crankcase/engine.
On one side of the engine you will have the PCV Valve or suction side, (some cars dont use a valve) and the other side you will have the Crank Case breather or "filter".
Your 1991 Grand Marquis has a 5.0 engine.
I believe it has a breather filter which will be located inside the air filter hosing and a PCV Valve which will be located on the Passenger Side Valve Cover. Check with a reputable parts store to verify.
If excessive pressure in the crankcase is not relieved by the PCV System, it can blow out things like the oil pan gasket. I have replaced many of Ford's one piece oil pan gaskets on the later 5.0 engines because the PCV system was never checked or replaced.
