Why did my motorcycle's exhaust suddenly become about ten times as loud while riding?
Literally, just as I turned the corner the exhaust noise suddenly became about ten times louder. I can't see any missing parts or anything - I checked and the exhaust baffle is still in. Any idea what it could be? It's a bit worrying. Could this be dangerous? It's not too loud for my ears or anything, but it's still weird that it just suddenly happened in an instant like that.
Hole in the exhaust is likely the issue - no point looking for it, it can be quite small. Wait till your bike is cold and start it up, then run your hand around the top/bottom/sides of the exhaust - you dont have to actually touch the exhuast just run the hand a few inches from it, if you feel air/blowing you have found your hole, mine was on the top between the engine and the top of the exhaust, i could not see it until i took the whole exhaust off but i could feel the blowing, so it is not always somewhere you can see.
Either than or a baffle has gone or the exhaust gasket where the exhaust goes into the engine has worn/moved and is blowing from there...a mechanic should be able to find the issue in no time without charging if you take it too them, asking if they can have a quick look to see what it is and advise on a cost of a replacement.
A blowing exhaust is going to fail its next MOT/fitness test. You can patch it if the hole is not too big with exhaust gum/paste but that only lasts a few weeks before it blows out so its a temp. repair anyhow.
