lining my rat cage?
i am going to get a hairless rat. and i heard that you can line the cage with fabric?
but, what kind of fabric can i use? do i use a towel? or shirt? or paper towel?
also, what cage accessories would you reccomend? and food? and i know i need to give them olive oil skin rubs as well. any other hairless rat care would be appriciated. thank you.
I agree with both post above but wanted to share my opinion in this matter. Allot of the bedding choices depend on what cage you have.
As far as a hairless vs a furred rat, all rats need friends keeping one alone is like putting a person in solitary confinement, not a real nice thing to think about. If you happen to get more make sure they are same sex pair either haired or not doesn't matter.
Fleece as bedding i have heard works best, it does not unravel which can cause choking and getting wrapped around a foot or tail which could end up in the lose of either. It is fairly inexpensive (large initial cost but it is reusable so you save money in the long run) it does however hold smells unlike some of the paper beddings out there. If you can get your rats potty trained (very possible I have 7 males all potty trained) then you lessen the smell and the cleaning time
always a good thing.
As far as cage accessorIEs go bird toys, tubes, hammocks, a cardboard box (very small) with food hidden in it, larger boxes to hide in and climb on, ropes for climbing, digging boxes (box with either fleece or sanitary dirt, ie not just reg ol dirt from your yard, lots of parasites and possible bugs in it, for the rats to dig and tunnel in)
as for food (this is for any rat) a good quality lab block plus a low protein seed mix with fresh fruits and veggies as a treat is always a good way to go.
The biggest difference between the hairless and furred is the hairless will loose heat more readily than a furred so making sure you have lots of snuggle stuff for them to cuddle with and that the room they are in is not real cold are two of the major things you need to think about.
Hope this helps
