How do car Clutch systems Work? How can a Clutch become worn down?(Gear-heads Welcome)?
I'm very interested in knowing the exact answers to these questions.
My car does things and I wonder if I or the car is damaging itself. Example: When I shift sometimes I let off the clutch too early and it "herks and jerks." I wonder if the forward and rear-ward movement is hurting my clutch, or if it is engaged yet. Another thing I notice is sometimes I drop the clutch into a gear. Meaning I am in the middle of shifting and I let the clutch pedal drop without a gentle transition. Is this damaging the clutch?
Some people tell me that it's the grinding of the clutch pad which causes it to wear out. And others say that "dropping the clutch" and "down shifting" do not damage the clutch. I want to know the truth.
I drive gently and normally dont shift gears for more than a second, unless I'm on a hill. Some of you out there have built these clutches. So please tell me what is going on inside my 5 speed car.
Thanks Alot!
all the previous answers were great down to the point... u should know clutch by now.....
Need to add when u change gears:
1. practice ur gears while the car is stopped , using clutch(skip that......u know them)
2.before u pull out of gear gently put a little tense on ur shift towards out of gear...
3. when u push the clutch a little, will jump out of gear.. (sometimes will go out not pushing the clutch, if u do push a little gas than release it right away, or ur car is going little downhill or flat surface- and keep the shift stick tense)
4 push the clutch all the way, when u get it in the gear slow move the shift stick ...
5. if u downshift...push the break...when rpm down...1000-2000... push the clutch....get it out of gear...push the acceleration just a little..(up to 3000 rpm top)...get it in next gear down... or if needed 2 gears down...rellease the clutch slower when down shifting
shifting should take 2 seconds or more....1 out.. 1 in... unless needed.....car will not stop even if uphill because of inertia ...
exercises (short story made long):
To work easier with the clutch.... feel where is getting the grip, that's the point where u have to go slower: in the parking lot, get into 1st gear... release it slow...no pushing the gas.....very slow......u will feel ur car trembling at one point...at that point u have a small gap... since ur clutch goes from released to unreleased.....That's the point u have to remember... for ur clutch to work...u have to push the pedal just beyond that point......should be in the middle range... if to high or too low, ur clutch is not adjusted right.....
As an exercise....put it into the first gear.. release the clutch slow not pushing the gas....play that little room u got like this: car would feel like moving, but engine would feel like dieing...keep the clutch at that position....u push it lower...car would stop, release it.. car would get little speed trembling....play that room until the car get little more speed... as u get speed engine feels stronger...it does take little practice...when u succeed to release the clutch all the way and move the car, without pushing the gas..... u have learned to deal with ur clutch.... and also to figure out how much stress u put into components when u release the clutch too fast.... Normal Driving does not require such a care, but if starting car uphill, u need to know that:.....keeping the break pedal on, release the clutch to the vibration point....at a certain point car is in equilibrium, does not go back does not go further....push the gas and release the clutch....u move the car, not using the hand brake...
