Wanna convert to a posi over one tire fire?
on my 79 Z28, some ass put one tire fire on the rear so i was wondering, what should i do to convert my rear end into a posi..
I heard of redoing the pinion gears but i heard it's easier just to swap out the rear end
if so, how could i make this work out?
plus, is one tire fire really better then a posi when its comes to racing?
A posi/limited slip is much better than an open peg leg rear for racing.
The open rear only sends power to 1 wheel, and most times that one wheel does not have enough traction so the tire just spins.
Posi/limited slip sends power to both wheels so you get more traction and less tire spin so now the power can be used to pus car foward rather than used up by spinning the tire
Next, what makes you think some ass put a diff rear in your z28?
The posi unit was an option only item. It did not come std in the z28 package. If you wanted posi you had to add the G80 option for an extra $64.00 at time your ordered car new
Only 38,604 1979 camaros came with(had added) the G80 posi rear. There was 84,877 Z28's made that year, and 282,582 total camaros made for 1979
Now more on yours. It could be posi now but with worn clutchs in posi unit, or lack of the right gear oil.
If its posi now, you can have the unit rebuilt.
If its an open rear for sure, Its pretty high to swap it to posi. You would need an aftermarket limited slip unit/carrier at around $450 and then to install it, its not a back yarder's type install. The ring and pinion gear has to be set up on new carrier. Labor to do this is around $300-500
You could look for a used posi 1972-81 camaro or firebird (yes firebird/trans am rears will fit right in) and just swap the whole unit. Also all the 77 and up trans am's came with posi and all the 79-81 trans ams came with posi and disc brake rear ends
Or you could buy a locker and install in yours. Something like the power trax lock right is about $300, can be installed at home with basic hand tools, works great and in fact with give you better lock of both rear tires than a std type posi unit ever could.
