The Subaru community refers to it as a down pipe. There are 2 cats in your down pipe and typically an after market one will have a bigger diameter pipe and one high flow cat or no cat at ll. Both are technically illegal but I have never heard of anyone actually being fined for it. It really depends ont the level of power you are looking for but a catless unit will typically only make a few more HP with the stock turbo or even a mildly upgraded one. Some people are bothered by the increased exhaust smell when running a catless unit but it never bothers me. And beware, if you have an 04 or newer WRX or an 05 or newer STI, do not install a down pipe without proper tuning to go along with it. These cars are not as forgiving as EVO's to bolt on mods. The added flow of a bigger down pipe can cause some serious boost spikes during the open loop/closed loop delay and potentially damage the engine. Engine management is a must but the reward is some serious gains so it's worth it. As far as noise goes, both catted and non catted will increase the sound a bit. Makes it deeper and bassy. Plus you hear the whizzing of the turbo spooling a lot more out the back and it sounds pretty cool.
