How can I gain Horsepower in my Pontiac 400?
Its a 1978 Pontiac 400. It already has 6X Heads, a cam, an edelbrock performer intake, and an edelbrock carb, but there is just not alot of power with it, I would have thought that these mods would have made it Fast, but it isnt. Could it be possible that some of the cylinders are bad? I want tirespinning power, what can I do?
The rear end is somewhere in the 2:'s so that also might be the reason why it doesnt accelerate fast.
Throwing performance parts at a engine will not make up for an internal engine problem. One of the first things you should have done is look at compression, timing, and general state of tune. Then you might consider a plugged cat...
A 2.73 rear gear will definately hold you back from the neck snapping power you seem to be looking for. But my 67 GTO with that same rear will still get up and go, and will pull hard through 100 MPH.
Diagnose the engine, see if it is a good candidate for a build up. If not, find one that is. There should be plenty of them around!
