What are the Pros and Cons of investing in stocks?
I need solid facts about stocks. If you have any informative websites, PLEASE SHARE!!!! thanks a million!
By the way, it's for a high school project. 3 pros and cons besides making and losing money?
As per the above, you can make money, and you can lose money.
Stocks are more volatile generally than other forms of investment (govt backed notes are some of the safest, penny stocks are the least safe - on a sliding scale).
Look for stocks that pay a consistent dividend; these provide income from divi payouts along with raises (hopefully) in underlying price. Also, when more individual investors get back into the market they will likely go for these types which will boost stock price.
Look at ETFs too - they trade like a stock, but are actually a group of stocks or commodities, this makes them instantly diverse and as such more stable than picking just one.
Look at Fool.com for some good advice.
Noticed your edit, I am currently reading a book called 'Never buy another Stock' http://www.amazon.com/Never-Another-Stock-Again-ebook/dp/B004323DPK if you access it at a library you'll get lots of the Cons side...
Generally speaking the vibe of the book is that Stocks (in general) are dangerous as they are marketed to individual investors, who do not have the time or knowhow to make an informed purchase, but are encouraged to do so regardless (easy access through websites like Etrade, Fidelity etc). Many magazines and websites push - the next big thing like Facebook IPO (initial public offering) so people throw all reason out of the window and end up losing.
The dream is to outperform the S&P 500 but nobody ever does it over time, so stocks are really a gamble that everybody loses on....
I am still invested though..
