Okay, I wanna go pick out a car next year or so, and when I go to the place where I look at it, should I take my dad with me to inspect it?
I was thinking about doing this since he grew up racing motorcycles, has won many trophies for racing, was an auto mechanic for over 10 years, and now sells car tools to other mechanics.
Do you think he'd be able to tell if I was going to get a lemon? Salesmen can be pretty sleazy.
The downside to all his experience is that dad's pretty cheap, so even when I try to spend my own cash on a vehicle, he might be all annoying and keep telling me to "Wait." He does this even when we go Christmas shopping.....
If I were buying a used car,and I had a dad who was an auto mechanic - I'd DEFINITELY take him with me to look! He's going to have the eye to tell you if it needs new tires, if it's been in an accident, if the transmission sounds good . . .etc.
For $20-30, you can also join autocheck.com or carfax.com.
Both of these give you a report on the car based on the VIN (vehicle identification number). The information varies- but you can find out how many owners it's had, if it was leased, in an accident, or moved from a flood area. We looked at about 200 autocheck.com reports before we bought a used car for my daughter last month. Here are some good websites to research/ see what's in your price range:
I would check both kbb and edmunds to find out the range value of the car- it varies.
craigslist.com, but be VERY careful though . . lots of scams
If you're buying a new car, you could go through Costco, or I think BJ's, if you're a member . . . they have 'no haggle' pricing . . . and you won't need your dad to get a good deal. Otherwise, take him if he's a good negotiator.
