I heard I do but they are ALOT of money. Do i need one? does everyone wear them?
Not everyone wears them and if you cannot afford one and are just starting out then the speed you would be going you are less likely to be in a position to have the need for it. If you can afford it then I suggest everyone should wear one but they do cost. The better you get at mx or sx the more likely you are to be in a higher consequence stack as the speed that they are going with other riders doing the same things do go wrong and it is nice to know that you have that extra protection. In an ideal world all the safety gear is a great idea and knee braces also a must but not eveyone can afford them and at the lower levels of racing while the chance of a stack is still there the chances of being in one that is really bad is not as great. It is like one of those things that you either choose to risk riding without one or you don't and you just have to weigh up the risks. You will find heaps of people at lower levels who don't bother with them and even some of the top riders don't wear them, but again that is their choice and a brace is not a requirement for being allowed to race. One day it may be but not at present.
