with hei ignition. what should i do to get this motor to run at its top potential... how far can i advance the timing and not hurt the engine... how can i get this engine to put out its max performance. but i DO NOT WANT TO REDLINE THIS ENGINE. I DO NOT WANT TO HURT IT IN ANYWAY... BUT I DO WANT TO KNOW WHAT TO TUNE ON IT AND WHAT THE MAX ADVANCE OR RETARD THE TIMING SHOULD BE FOR MAX PERFORMANCE IN RACING. STOCK SBC WITH EDELBROCK PERFORMER INTAKE AND 650 CFM EDELBROCK CARB. WITH K&N AIR CLEANER, DUAL EXHAUST WITH CHERRY BOMB GLASS PACKS 2 INCH INLET OUTLET AND MY EXHAUST PIPE IS 3 INCH RUNNING RAM AIR EXHAUST MANIFOLDS FOR NOW. PLEASE LET ME KNOW. IM OPEN TO ALL OPINIONS AND HELP ON THIS. ENGINE HAS APPROXIMATELY 4400 MILES ON IT I BELIEVE OR MORE.
Best thing would be to get hold of an advance reading timing light. One with a dial on the back, so you can read higher than the marks on the balancer go. Then, after checking to make sure both your vacuum and centrifugal advance are in proper working order (about 16 - 18 degrees each, max), set the total advance to 40 degrees.
(Check what your timing is set at now, at idle, with the vacuum advance unhooked and plugged. Then what it is when you plug it back on. Then what it is when you rev it up to about 3,000 RPM and hold it there momentarily. Subtract the first figure from the 2nd, and the 2nd from the 3rd, to figure advance specs.)
If you hear any pinging, dial it back a few until the next time your gas tank gets pretty low, and try it again after you put in the next higher grade of gas.
