I need more traction so i'm looking at either a posi or an auto locker and what gear ratio is going to be optimal for torque and gas mileage? highway backroad offroad, towing and hauling a camperwhat is the best way to go where i could get a set up for under $600
Sounds like you need an all purpose gear ratio (highway, off-road, hauling, towing, etc.), something like a 3.42:1 or 3.73:1, depending on the wheel and tire size, and you already have that from the factory unless someone has changed it. So I suggest you stay with the factory ratio but you can improve traction by installing an Eaton Posi Performance, Eaton Detroit Truetrac, or Eaton Detroit Locker differential with your same factory ratio (3.42:1 or 3.73:1), although if go with the Eaton Detroit Locker (delivers 100% of the torque to both drive wheels) you will need to rotate your tires about every 5000 miles to assure even tread wear. You might consider a 4.10:1 ratio if you want to improve your off-road, hauling, and towing performance although that will reduce your fuel mileage and top speed.
