I have a 2001 F150 4x4. My rear wheel bearing seal is leaking gear lube, how do I get the seal/bearing out?
tazz8144 is absolutely correct. I would like to add that you will need to remove the rear brake rotor on the axle with the leaking seal. This is achieved by simply removing the two 10mm bolts that secure the brake caliper to the backing plate and removing the caliper. The brake rotor should simply slide out after that. You may encounter difficulty with the rotor binding on the parking brake shoes, if the parking brake is stuck partially engaged to the rotor, so be sure to verify the parking brake lever is pushed back as far as it will go. The two rear axles on that vehicle are either 8.8" or 9.75". Also, when removing the axle, be sure to have the axle positioned where the wheel studs do not contact the parking brake shoe anchor at around the 12 o'clock position. This ensures that you will be able to push the axle inward far enough to enable the c-clip to slip out. Once finished, and the rear diff cover reinstalled, the easiest way to refill the rear diff is through the top by removing the rear diff speed sensor. Fill with the 3/8" square drive plug removed on the driver side of the housing. It should take approximately 3 litres of 75W140. Do not forget to add the friction modifier additive if it is a locking rear diff. Hope this helps.
