Car Leaks gas from somewhere around the tank?
I have a 1995 Buick Century 2.2L and it has started to leak gas from the somewhere around the tank. I havent have it much of a look yet but it seems to be coming from somewhere around the tank. I noticed that it was leaking during an hour trip when the gas guage went from 3/4 full to less than 1/4 in about 80 miles. Plus it smelled terribly when the windows were down.
So the question is, how much of a hassle will it be if I try to fix it? I realize that if it is the tank it is going to be tough, but i dont think it is since it was leaking a lot when i turned off the engine and very little when it was sitting for a couple minutes.
So if any of you have done this before please give me some advice or tips. That would help a lot. I really dont want to take this car in to a repair shop and I hope that I am able to do this myself.
Thanks a lot,
Cole
It sounds like maybe you have a hose or line leaking from the pump, which shuts off when the car is off and the leak stops.
This is dangerous and should be taken care of immediatlely. A small spark and your car could be gone.
If it were a hole in the tank, it would keep dripping, so I suspect something like a leaking line or maybe if there is a rubber hose connected somewhere, the hose is rotted or the clamps come loose.
At first, I was thinking about the vent line, from the tank, which will run gas back into the tank if the fill tube is over filled, but if the vent line is broken, it will leak. But you said you drove 80 miles and the gas kept going down, so I think it is something to do with the supply line to the engine.
