Adjusting screamin' eagle pushrods when rebuilding heads on 1340 engine?
If you don't turn the motor over or roll the cam at all when redoing heads can you set each push rod at zero tolerance then turn 2 1/2 turns and will the valves be set as they were???
NO!!!
When adjusting the pushrods....the engine MUST be at room temp and the cylinder being worked on MUST be at TOP DEAD CENTER COMPRESSION!!!
If you adjust the pushrods with the engine in the position as it sits now, some, if not all the cam lobes will be up and the adjustment will be off, causing the valves to hit each other and the pistons.
Install the pushrods fully shortened, then do the front cylinder, slowly roll the engine in its normal direction of rotation and hold the intake pushrod, watch for it to go up and then fully down, CAREFULLY stick a pencil in the front plug hole and SLOWLY rotate the engine until you feel the pencil move up and STOP, do not go past this point, this is TDC Compression, lower the rear wheel to keep the engine from rotating past this point, then adjust the pushrods. After they are done, wait 15 minutes for the lifters to bleed down before rolling the engine over to do the rear.
