Safety Switch Carb

Safety Switch Carb
Bought 1970s outboard Johnson 50 hp. Takes several tries to start, then when shifting into gear stalls.?

It sat for over a year before using, but was winterized and cared for. Just purchased it. It takes lots of starts to get going. Once it done, if it's not immediately put in gear at a pretty good throttle then it stalls while being put in gear. Reverse or forward.

I can; however, start it in gear. It's a 1972 so I recon there was no safety in gear starting switch. What could be happening? I replaced the plugs.

If it's a carb job, is this a major expense repair at a marina? Please give me some insight here.

nope, no clutch. electric start models have electric shifter. Those need a very specific gear oil. Yours probably is, since those will crank in forward gear. be careful with it, parts for those electric gearboxes are hard to come by. It was a bad idea and they only made it a few model years. If the shift solenoid is bad, I recommend you trash the gearcase and look for a compatible mechanical shift gearbox. That's probably why they sold it.

Maybe just needs carb rebuilt. one carburetor on that motor, expect around $125 parts & labor just for the carb. But have them do a compression test & a spark test, and test the lower unit. If it has bad compression, there's no point spending any more money on it. It'll just be a fine old anchor at that point.

If compression & spark are good, 3 things you definately want to have done: carb, water pump, and gear oil change. The gear oil they have to change anyway to service the water pump, which ought not to be more than a couple hundred bucks.
