85 Chevy 4x4 - 400 SBC?
m in the process of building an 1985 Chevy 4x4 (8" lift and 39" tires) and I'm trying to find the best (and affordable) motor to throw in her. I have found a ton of 350's, but a buddy of mine has a 400 SBC (stock) I can get for about as much as any 350, but it's been sitting for 2 years. I also found a pretty good deal on a 355 that I believe is stock but the owner said it came out of a drag truck.
Oh, I should probably add that I don't plan on building any of these motors. I want to throw in one of these for now while I build the motor I want.
I'm not really planning on mudding this truck, but I do want pretty good power out of it for the sand dunes while I build my motor. While I'm posting, I should ask if my 700r4 will bolt up to the 400 and 355 SBC. I plan on getting a different tranny, but will mine work for the time being?
A 400 is a great mule once you put 6 inch connecting rods in it. Otherwise, it's a waste of time.
In all honesty, a Big Block Chevy is the cheapest and most reliable cost per HP in the business. And it makes the numbers where you need them.
You need to put an engine in there which makes the numbers for you in the RPM range where you are going to drive. Most likely, with a 4X4, that's going to be primarily right at idle to about 2500 RPM. Cam it accordingly.
