I have a broken exhaust valve because the compression is low in cylinder 3 and its misfiring but not too bad. I was just wondering should i take this time to rebuild the engine because it has like 199,000 miles on it but it has never given me any trouble. I think i'm gonna grasp this opportunity to rebuild the engine but i need to know what to inspect before i get ready to tear it down. I'm gonna start this weekend i already have the head gasket kit, and exhaust valves but before i taske the heads to the machine shop for resurrfacing what else should i inspect (camshaft,bearings, lifters,springs,guides,etc). and the car is a 2003 impala ls with a rebuilt tranny 15k ago.
you need to have the block prepped and checked to see if the cylinder walls and cam bearing are ok, they might need to bore it, but if not then be sure to put copper coating on the block surface under the head gaskets to fill in the pits in the block, it will just reassure that the head gasket seats properly and doesnt blow out.Yes, the 3800 is one of the best engines gm put out and is worth rebuilding, but i would have the block prepped also, hope this helps and good luck. you do need to go ahead and put new valve guide seals in it also, and check the springs for breaks and weaknesses.P.S. be sure to follow the torque sequence carefully because that is a tricky motor and if not torqued properly the gasket will not seat.
