can my engine overheat by switching to synthetic oil?
I recently had an oil change done on my 97 Concorde and switched from conventional to synthetic. My car has been fine for a few days but within the last 2 days the engine has started to overheat during idling and low speeds. I checked the fan relays and they are fine. So could it be the oil or are my fans busted?
Its not the oil, you've got some other problems. The synthetic oil is better for your engine than conventional and no oil should cause you car to overheat. Sounds like something wrong with your cooling system. First check your coolant level, to find out if the fans are working pop the hood turn it on and let it sit and wait for it to get hot and see if the fans come on, if the fans don't come on it doesn't necessarily mean their busted, the one thing you failed to think of that can very easily cause this problem is the thermostat. Try taking out the thermostat and running it without for a little bit, just idling, I'll bet it doesn't overheat and the fans come on.
