Man, I needed to service our Ranger pick up last week. I bought the filters and fluids and got started. I got the transmission drained and the filter in and grabbed the fuel filter line to change the fuel filter. Always before, there was a hairpin clip at the end of the fuel line. Well I grabbed the U shaped clip and tried to remove it. Yep, it broke. It seems it is a push tab, not a clip. OK, got on-line and researched the part. Called the dealer and they only sell the entire line for $ 200. Finally found a fix it kit at a NAPA auto parts store. So I cut the nylon line from the steel one so I would get the right part. Now I find that the fix it kit only works if there is still a nylon hose attached to the stainless line. I can't stretch the hose enough to go over the fitting on the stainless line. Next, I either need to have the repair done ( how much will that cost?) or buy parts and cut the stainless line and add a different fitting. It just gets worse.

Just Thursday I did a tune up on a 99 Ranger, also had a problem with the fuel filter. The front line came of nicely but the back side would not come off. I removed the metal clip but no matter what I tried it would not come off of the line. I found that the rubber braided hose was bad so I just cut the steel line aft of the rubber hose (going towards the fuel tank) and put in a foot of fuel injection hose with double hose clamps on both ends. A little trick I learned to was gently take a sharp pocket knife and gently ream out the hose just a bit to allow it to go over the nub (raised area of fuel filter line that the clip locks) on the fuel filter.
If you are talking about the front side line I would do the same thing and run the new rubber hose up to where you can find the steel line again. It may turn out cheaper than the kit you had bought. I payed about $7.00 for the hose and clamps.
