Steel Header Off

Steel Header Off
Heat Shields: What is most effective?

Hi all. I'm making a heat shield out of sheetmetal to cover my starter from the heat from the header as it is getting heat soaked.

I'm not tooo keen on leaving the bare metal. It is galvanized (I think) but still rusts if it gets scratched.

I have various things I can coat it with... whether just clear 500* engine paint or I have extra Hi-Temp Silicone coating from exhaust wrap... 1500* protection. However... would that actually keep heat away from the header?

It sort of seems that if the heat shield is coated with something that doesn't absorb heat then it won't be as effective... then again, steel doesn't radiate off heat all that quickly anyhow so I'm not sure what would be most effective.

Enlighten me please!! -Stu

galvanized is not a good metal to pick as if you get i to hot you will burn it off. On top of that it will make a smoke that can make you sick.

I would coat it with ir reflective paint or coating. They are made for ovens and klins.

Allso why don't you just buy a starter cover? They make them.
