Drilling into bungalow chimney breast and hit something...?
I have drilled no more than half an inch into an internal chimney breast in a bungalow and the drill will not go any further, therefore may I have hit something? I do know that the chimney is steel lined as there was a previous back boiler but I was expecting there to be masonry / block before that. I am using a cordless drill, set on the hammer setting. I only want to hang a picture and at the moment I have hung it with short nails either side but I am worried this will not hold long term as they will not go in fully due to hitting what ever it is I hit with the drill. The bungalow was built pre 1970 if that helps.
Thank you in advance.
I would turn the power and water off before continuing - its unlikely theres either up there, but - hey you can never tell ( been zapped a few times by cowboy electrics )
If the plaster is quite thick, its possible its just a screwhead on the plasterboard underneath .
or it could be a metal lintel
Try 20mm left or right. and 20 mm higher - if thats no good either, you could glue a small batten plate to the wall using something like "no nails" and then screw that to the wall with maybe 4 screws to a depth of plate plus 12mm. Then attach your picture to the plate.
good luck
