Rotating noise when driving. Whenever I drive my 2006 turbo-charged subaru wrx locally, why is there a noise?
When I drive my 2006 turbo charged subaru impreza wrx (3.5 years old, 39k miles) in city driving between 25-35mph at 1.5k rev/min, there is a noise. It sounds like there is something attached to the axle, and when the axle rotates, it sounds like something is hitting the ground. I looked, nothing is attached to the axle. It is about 2x/sec.... the sound is mid car, not near the engine. I notice when I gently press the brake (and/or release the brake), the sound terminates.

thanks for your help. i don't want to inconvenience you, but do you by any chance know of a website that tells me where the drive shaft is and where the rear diff fluid container is? thanks

check the drive shaft to make sure its tight. check the rear diff fluid level. if not those then you have a internal tranny, center, or rear diff problem.
the drive shaft is in the center of the car connected to the transmission and rear diff. it runs pretty much paralell to the exhaust under the car. its about 3.5-4ft long and is black. the rear diff is the center of the back axel housing. to do a fluid check there are two bolts on the back side. remove the top one, if your parked on a level surface the fluid should barely come out. thats full. if nothing happens you can stick your finger in the hole to feel the level of fluid. if nothing, open the bottem and drain. put the bottem back in and fill with two quarts of GEAR OIL, NOT ENGINE OIL. a good website to go to is www.nasioc.com. you can find out a lot of info there. hope this helps.
