For those not familiar, Newsom is the the ultra liberal mayor of San Francisco who brought the gay marriage issue to the forefront a in 2004 by illegally overruling state law and allowing gays to marry.
No, it was his piss-poor performance as Mayor in every possible aspect. I live in the SF area, and Gavin is widely considered to be a bumbler with a history of questionable decisions.
He was also hamstrung by a very public falling-out with his campaign manager that led to half his staff quitting. That killed him, since it became clear that he wasn't an organizer or a leader.
AG Brown hasn't even announced yet, and he has his own problems with a growing scandal in his office over an aide illegally taping phone calls.
It's funny to see how leery the usual suspects are about running for the state's top job. Sacramento is such a mess that no one wants to be the most visible target for the outraged voting public.
