Can I use a Idler pulley for my super chrager pulley on my 1999 grand prix gtp?
I am getting a loud clicking noise while my grand prix is idling and when I slow down. I have looked everywhere and the only pulley anyone has is a idler pulley and it is 3.25 in. and my pulley that is on my supercharger is 3.5 in. will that work? They are both grooved and one is just slightly smaller, does it connect the same way and will it hurt it in any way? It just started clicking and it sounds like it is right at that pulley coming out of the supercharger.
Hi Nathan,
I would not advise using a smaller pulley on your supercharger because it will turn at a different speed. A smaller diameter pulley will turn slower than a larger diameter pulley, which will affect the way your motor runs...it will then be starving for air and that can cause more damage than you want. What I would do to find the exact source of the noise is take a small pry bar or a small piece of a broom handle and place the end of it on the head of the bolt that holds that pulley on then put your ear on the other end of it. What this does is makes that bar or wooden handle act like a doctor's stethescope and you will be able to hear the grinding or clicking noise you describe very clearly. If the noise isn't coming from that bearing, move it to the idler pulley and put it on the head of that bolt, then on to your alternator housing, then water pump and so on. If you use this method you will find the exact source of the noise. If none of those are the sound you're hearing, put the bar/handle on the housing of the supercharger as close to that pulley as you can safely, it could also be an internal bearing that is starting to go. Of course your engine has to be running while you do all of this.
Good Luck!
