How do I get into GNR on Fallout 3 (Xbox 360)?
I click on the 'Following in His Footsteps' quest, and a white marker pops up on my radar. But when I try to follow it, the place it tells me to go is sealed by rubble. I went into the metro stations, but wherever it says to go is a dead end. I've also tried swimming to Rivet City, so that once I get there I'll be able to walk to Galaxy News Radio, but since I was on the other side of the Potomac River, I got Deadly Rad. Poisoning and eventually died after I used up all my Rad-Aways and Rad-X's. (And I STILL didn't even get to Rivet City! o_O"). And I can't seem to find Smith Casey's Garage (where Vault 112 & my dad is hidden--my dad took me to Rivet City when I started my first account). Anyways, it's really pissing me off and I need help!
Wow, you seem really confused about this and this is disconcerting to me because these games aren't rocket science by any stretch.
Open your Pip-Boy and click on Data>Quests. Click on "Following in his Footsteps" and then go up and to the right and click where it says "Show Location". Your World Map will open and an arrow will be placed on the GNR building and a dotted line will show you the many legs in the path you must take to get there, probably very generally because you haven't discovered the locations along the way yet. From Megaton you will head toward the river, past SuperDuper Mart, and directly across the river is the Metro subway entrance which begins your underground journey to GNR.
The green arrow on your compass (which is on the left hand side of your screen when playing normally) will be blinking fast when you get near it and you can see your path on either the Local Map or World Map in the Pip-Boy. Once inside the subway you'll want to use your compass and your Local Map AND there are also subway signs and graffiti pointing the way to GNR, and in other subways to "The Mall".
I don't understand how you became so sick swimming to Rivet City. I always swim to Rivet City early in the game and rarely get more than minor radiation poisoning without using any meds.
Also Rivet City is nowhere near GNR although one could travel through the subways and downtown from the Anacostia Station near Rivet City and eventually get to GNR and the Capitol Mall but it would take forever!? The only reasons to go to Rivet City early is to get the Intelligence Bobblehead or for Moira's Wasteland Survival Guide or to get A3-21's Plasma Rifle.
And why not forget about Smith Casey's Garage and the main quest and just explore and level up and you can do all that main quest stuff later. Why stress yourself when there's so much else to do in the Wasteland. The best reason to get to GNR is so you can help 3-Dog get a new antenna dish enabling you to listen to the radio anywhere in the Wasteland.
